My oldest son, Dennis, is "going green". To his fleet, he added this electric golf cart (street legal). A few days later he added the tilt bed on the back. This vehicle will be used to deliver pizzas (mostly in the University of Idaho football stadium "The Dome"). I'm trying to convince him to buy another one for my summer use.....he can have it the rest of the year. :-)
As you will see at the bottom of this list, Tony's relatives are also visiting the Phillip Blog. So...just to surprise them, I am giving you this URL to visit. This is an airlines ad with Kevin Spacey going around sitting in all kinds and types of different chairs. The chair he sits in just after the basketball stadium seat ~ a stainless steel armchair ~ was designed and is manufactured by Tony's oldest son, Jonathan. Jonathan lives in a rural area northwest of Barcelona, Spain. The first time we visited was in 1999 on our honeymoon. Picture is of me sitting in one of the "infamous" chairs.
Also included is a picture of a set of salt and pepper shakers we have ~ made in Spain ~ to look just like the chairs.
When most of the Phillip family was together in Mitchell NE recently, we scanned this article about Mary & Dallas. As always, just double click on the picture to see a bigger version of the picture. Mary & Dallas have a very good website about their "Meeting the Need" endeavor ~ http://www.meetingtheneed.com/index.html ~
I also found this article among Bob's information and pictures:
Meeting the Need article:
While visiting Judy in Alliance, we went to look at Grandpa Willie's car (pictures are saved for a later blog). As we rounded one corner at the former Everett Mann home, this was what I saw ~ two "Mann" semis parked side by side, with the "MANN" proudly put on the front of the trailers. Melanie (Jared's wife) and Sherry (Cory's wife) both have the Cricket machine. They made the lettering for the trailers.
I visited Janice in Alliance this year (July, 2009). Janice has Grandma Alma Phillip's Shirley Temple doll. I believe it is correct that Bob bought this doll for Grandma Phillip when Shirley Temple was very popular. Here are two pictures of the doll in Janice's home.
Ray and Judi visited Bob in South Dakota recently (August, 2009). They took a side trip to visit Eleanor Vifquain Harkin (Grandma Phillip's niece, Elmer Victor Vifquain's daughter). Eleanor married Bernie Harkin. They had nine children born between 1942 and 1961. The oldest daughter is in this picture with Ray and Bob ~ Barbara born in 1942.
In February, 2009, I took a few notes as Bob was talking about the "good ole days". These, I hope, are Bob's exact words
Springview - "could see daylight out of roof. Roof didn't leak. Old shingles cracked. Sand blew so bad they would close school. Cattle would walk over the top of fences after sand blew up against the fence."
Depression – "sheriff came to get horses. Pistols of Willie Walter Phillip convinced the sheriff to not take the horses. Willie said "I will bring them to town". Otherwise, there would have been a feed bill also."
Bob ~ "used pistol one time when he was a superintendant. Iron workers were picketing the job. I would come home and picketers would follow me. I go to work, picketers would follow. Made me nervous. Went to Ken and asked "You still got the old man’s 38" "want to show it to a guy". Kept pistol beside me in vehicle. One of the picketers noticed it – said "you carry a gun?" "Can you hit anything with it?" "Let’s see what you can do". Can was thrown up in the air twice and I hit it both times. I quit while I was ahead. I practiced by shooting a box of shells through it every week, but the picketers quit sitting in front of my house."
Aunt Agnes’ gun – Ken said "my rifle" This is all I wrote down ~ anyone have the rest of this story???
Jap rifle story ~ "I sent M-1 carbines (two of them) back to Ken during WWII……collect….carpenter shop……broke them down….shipped in a skill saw box.,….2 rifles….tools….sent express collect…probably called Ken collect also. Ken was madder than hell that he had to pay shipping….3 months later he put new stalk on his."
5th of whiskey story ~ "ran into Ken on street, two of us went to the firehall and drank. Went home, lived in Ushio’s upstairs (415 Sweetwater), long stair way. Woke up with a bucket over my head with the handle across my eyes….thought I was in jail…handle looked like a bar. Bernadine had thought I might need the bucket to throw up so she put it over my head."
Grandma Phillip’s cousin had a photography shop. That probably accounts for why she was so much into photography. She took all the pictures that were published in the "Next Year Country" book.
As most of you know ~ Bob and Leo are roadtripping to Branson MO this month to attend Bob's Navy ship reunion. I bet the town will never be the same....as a matter of fact, I bet Bob and Leo will never be the same either!!
I have had fun watching the traffic on the Phillip blog....I don't always catch every one that arrives on the blog, but to date there have been 12 countries and 33 states visiting the blog. Thanks for all your interest.
