Miscellaneous Items of Interest

Judi Phillip(Ray's wife) now has a second great grandchild. Granddaughter Ruby Jo (Scott's daughter) gave birth to her second son on September 11th, 2009, Elijah Josiah. Elijah is pictured here with his older brother, Zane Arthur (two years old).

My oldest son, Dennis, is "going green". To his fleet, he added this electric golf cart (street legal). A few days later he added the tilt bed on the back. This vehicle will be used to deliver pizzas (mostly in the University of Idaho football stadium "The Dome"). I'm trying to convince him to buy another one for my summer use.....he can have it the rest of the year. :-)

As you will see at the bottom of this list, Tony's relatives are also visiting the Phillip Blog. So...just to surprise them, I am giving you this URL to visit. This is an airlines ad with Kevin Spacey going around sitting in all kinds and types of different chairs. The chair he sits in just after the basketball stadium seat ~ a stainless steel armchair ~ was designed and is manufactured by Tony's oldest son, Jonathan. Jonathan lives in a rural area northwest of Barcelona, Spain. The first time we visited was in 1999 on our honeymoon. Picture is of me sitting in one of the "infamous" chairs.

Also included is a picture of a set of salt and pepper shakers we have ~ made in Spain ~ to look just like the chairs.

When most of the Phillip family was together in Mitchell NE recently, we scanned this article about Mary & Dallas. As always, just double click on the picture to see a bigger version of the picture. Mary & Dallas have a very good website about their "Meeting the Need" endeavor ~ http://www.meetingtheneed.com/index.html ~

I also found this article among Bob's information and pictures:

Meeting the Need article:

While visiting Judy in Alliance, we went to look at Grandpa Willie's car (pictures are saved for a later blog). As we rounded one corner at the former Everett Mann home, this was what I saw ~ two "Mann" semis parked side by side, with the "MANN" proudly put on the front of the trailers. Melanie (Jared's wife) and Sherry (Cory's wife) both have the Cricket machine. They made the lettering for the trailers.

I visited Janice in Alliance this year (July, 2009). Janice has Grandma Alma Phillip's Shirley Temple doll. I believe it is correct that Bob bought this doll for Grandma Phillip when Shirley Temple was very popular. Here are two pictures of the doll in Janice's home.

Ray and Judi visited Bob in South Dakota recently (August, 2009). They took a side trip to visit Eleanor Vifquain Harkin (Grandma Phillip's niece, Elmer Victor Vifquain's daughter). Eleanor married Bernie Harkin. They had nine children born between 1942 and 1961. The oldest daughter is in this picture with Ray and Bob ~ Barbara born in 1942.

In February, 2009, I took a few notes as Bob was talking about the "good ole days". These, I hope, are Bob's exact words

Springview - "could see daylight out of roof. Roof didn't leak. Old shingles cracked. Sand blew so bad they would close school. Cattle would walk over the top of fences after sand blew up against the fence."

Depression – "sheriff came to get horses. Pistols of Willie Walter Phillip convinced the sheriff to not take the horses. Willie said "I will bring them to town". Otherwise, there would have been a feed bill also."

Bob ~ "used pistol one time when he was a superintendant. Iron workers were picketing the job. I would come home and picketers would follow me. I go to work, picketers would follow. Made me nervous. Went to Ken and asked "You still got the old man’s 38" "want to show it to a guy". Kept pistol beside me in vehicle. One of the picketers noticed it – said "you carry a gun?" "Can you hit anything with it?" "Let’s see what you can do". Can was thrown up in the air twice and I hit it both times. I quit while I was ahead. I practiced by shooting a box of shells through it every week, but the picketers quit sitting in front of my house."

Aunt Agnes’ gun – Ken said "my rifle" This is all I wrote down ~ anyone have the rest of this story???

Jap rifle story ~ "I sent M-1 carbines (two of them) back to Ken during WWII……collect….carpenter shop……broke them down….shipped in a skill saw box.,….2 rifles….tools….sent express collect…probably called Ken collect also. Ken was madder than hell that he had to pay shipping….3 months later he put new stalk on his."

5th of whiskey story ~ "ran into Ken on street, two of us went to the firehall and drank. Went home, lived in Ushio’s upstairs (415 Sweetwater), long stair way. Woke up with a bucket over my head with the handle across my eyes….thought I was in jail…handle looked like a bar. Bernadine had thought I might need the bucket to throw up so she put it over my head."

Grandma Phillip’s cousin had a photography shop. That probably accounts for why she was so much into photography. She took all the pictures that were published in the "Next Year Country" book.

As most of you know ~ Bob and Leo are roadtripping to Branson MO this month to attend Bob's Navy ship reunion. I bet the town will never be the same....as a matter of fact, I bet Bob and Leo will never be the same either!!

I have had fun watching the traffic on the Phillip blog....I don't always catch every one that arrives on the blog, but to date there have been 12 countries and 33 states visiting the blog. Thanks for all your interest.

Ken Phillip 100th Birthday

In honor of what would have been Ken Phillip's 100th birthday, I have shown what he did with his retirement years. Ken & Harriet moved out to Moscow, Idaho in 1978, after Ken retired. I lived in Pullman (eight miles away). I felt responsible for "keeping Dad busy". Below are as many projects as I could find in my house that Dad built for me. Usually, once I got the prototype, the rest of my brothers and brother's wives wanted at least one also.

When Judy Mann heard about what I was doing for Dad's 100th Birthday Blog, she wanted to share a story about this shelf:

Kenneth made this shelf for Judy in the late 1950s. I think he was commissioned by Maxine for a gift for Judy. Judy married Larry and left the shelf behind. When Jean and Maxine moved from their home on Newberry Street and a miscommunication between Maxine and Judy, the shelf was put on the auction block. Judy attended the auction and bought the shelf for $13.00.

This is a picture of Dad's branding iron which he used faithfully on everything he made ~ "Hand crafted by Kenneth Phillip". After he got the branding iron, many of us had him visit our homes and brand things he made prior to having the iron. Mom had a terrible time getting him to brand his wooden projects on the bottom....Dad thought the brand should be in a prominent visible spot.
One of the biggest wood projects Dad did was build Grandfather clocks. These pictures show one of the small clocks (both Dennis & Kenny have one, so the clock in the mirror is appropriate to show two of them). Dad is shown stanging next to our first clock, now belonging to Dennis. We have one of the large clocks as shown in the next picture.

He built numerous hall trees, sofa tables, and piano benches

Dad made several different types of quilt racks and holders.

.....and bathroom shelves

Holders for many things.....napkins, special coins, UK placemats

For the dining room....Dad built many casserole holders, trivetts, and nut cracker bowls

He built what-not sheves for all occasions...in our Christmas room, and our bedroom, plus many more shelves.

Remember the two boxes Dad mad for each of the family reunions, one in 1989 and one in 1995. He also made a box for each of his six kids 50th birthdays as well as their spouses.

He made many rolling pin holders so all of us "donut shop owners" could hang our huge rolling pins.....and whirley gigs for outside hanging.

Tony convinced him to build a wood box to sit by our fireplace, which Dad built in 2001 ~ He was 92 years old and still working in his garage!

Hanging letter boxes and baseball card boxes.....and Dad made at least 50 of the plant hangers.

He made necklace holders, a ladder to display miniature Christmas decorations, and scarf holdlers.

Holders for thread in the sewing room....Rosebud vases

Plastic bag holders and "roll of stamp" holders....

Holders for picture calendars (I now use this one to display calendar pictures I particularly like...I have another one in the kitchen for the picture calendar)....Barbie doll boxes (he made nine of these for me.....four of them are for each of my granddaughters with a Happy Holidays Barbie bought the year they were each born)

A portable desk to be used in the car.....and a box he built for me in the 1960s to hold all of my beautician supplies

This box was built to hold crafts...I believe it was one of a kind. Dad built numerous scissor holders.

Dad built many picture frames....one example is of the picture frames he built for all of us for our quarter posters. He built a holder for an antique cup and saucer with a bar below it for a cross stitch mini towel made by Cindy Phillip.

A magazine rack.....a clock

Coaster holders and hurricane lamps

He made several pen holders

The cute "exercise block" and golf ball inside a box....

Believe these are one of a kind....a phone stand for my desk and a cedar box

Dad made numerous pictures frames for all of us....this one was made for postcards. The postcard is of the Alliance fountain. He made many wood frames for the cross stitch project shown.

I didn't photograph every frame, shelf, etc.....but you get the idea of what Ken Phillip did during his retirement years.
I knew Dad had built something for every room in our home....we see and use them every day.....but, until I started this project of capturing them on film....I had no idea the extent of just how many items he had built before and during his retirement years. If doing what you love creates a happy life.....our Dad, Ken Phillip, did a good job.
